Made by a hand, not only by a machine
Artisan here means a person shaped the piece, so no two are identical. That covers hand-painted canvas, hand-blown glass, carved wood and thrown ceramic, and it includes the work of the artists in our partner program. Variation is the feature, not a defect. A hand-finished piece will differ slightly from its photograph in the way a printed one will not, which is the reason to buy it. If you need exact repeatability across several desks, a machine-finished piece is the better call.
Common questions
What does artisan mean on this site?
That a person shaped or finished the piece by hand rather than a process doing all of it. In practice that means hand-painted, hand-blown, carved, thrown or hand-glazed work, so each piece carries small differences from the next.
Will the piece I receive look exactly like the photograph?
Close, but not identical, and that is inherent to hand work. Expect variation in brushwork, glaze, grain or bubble pattern. If a piece has to match another one exactly, hand-finished is the wrong category to buy from.
Is the artist named?
For the partner program, yes. Ergovanta works with a small roster of artists and makers each year, and their work is credited on its own pages. See the Partners page for the current roster.
Is artisan work suitable for a corporate or education order?
For accent pieces, yes; for anything needing a uniform look across many rooms, no. Hand-finished stock varies by definition, and quantity is limited by how fast a person can make it. For volume orders, ask us and we will tell you honestly which pieces can actually be repeated.
