Buying guide

How to light a room.

Good lighting is not one bright fixture. It is three kinds of light, layered, so a room can shift from working to winding down without you thinking about it.

Most rooms are lit by accident. One ceiling fixture, switched on at full, flattening everything underneath it. It works, in the sense that you can see. But it never feels like much. The fix is not a brighter bulb. It is thinking in layers.

The three layers of light

Every considered room balances three jobs. Get the mix right and the room does the rest, quietly, from morning through to the last hour of the night.

1. Ambient, the base coat

The soft, general light that fills a room so nothing falls dark. A floor lamp or a wide pendant does this better than a single ceiling spot, because it spreads light outward instead of pressing straight down.

Spar in a workspace Use it for ambient Spar - 51-Inch Walnut LED Linear Pendant Light - Modern Ceiling Lighting A long, even wash across the whole table. The overhead layer most rooms are missing. $199.95

2. Task, light that works

Directed light for a real activity: reading, writing, working. It should sit close to the task and stay out of your eyeline, so you get the light without the glare.

Scandinavian Touch-Dim Desk Lamp Use it for task Nord - Scandinavian Touch-Dim Desk Lamp - Cordless Philips LED Office Light A tight, dimmable pool for a desk or a reading chair. Touch to set the level and leave it. $53.95

3. Accent, the mood

The small light that has no job except feeling. A low lamp on a shelf, a glow behind a bottle. It is the layer people skip and the one that makes a room read as finished.

Lunar Pebble Lamp Use it for accent Lunar - Pebble Lamp - 3D-Printed Moon Orb on Stacked Ceramic Base A sculptural, low glow for a console or a back shelf. Warmth where you want the eye to rest. $47.95

A room lit in one layer is a room you switch on. A room lit in three is one you live in.

Warmth matters more than brightness

The number to watch is color temperature, measured in kelvin. Lower is warmer. For living and working spaces, aim for 2400 to 2700K, the warm amber of late afternoon. Anything above 3500K starts to feel like a waiting room, no matter how nice the lamp. When in doubt, go warmer than you think you want.

Wooden Mushroom LED Desk Lamp Use it for accent Chanterelle - Wooden Mushroom LED Desk Lamp - Minimalist Ambient Accent Light A rounded wooden glow for a side table or a shelf. Quiet enough to leave on into the evening. $74.95

Common mistakes

One light, full blast. The single overhead fixture is the most common lighting in the world and the least flattering. Add two lower sources and turn the ceiling down.

Cool bulbs in warm rooms. A good lamp with a 4000K bulb undoes itself. Match the bulb to the mood, not the box it came in.

Light at eye level. A bare bulb in your sightline is glare, not warmth. Shade it, or aim it at a wall.
